I have been trying to install the software that came with a Logitech Web Cam but the installation fails mid way through - an 'Uninstall' icon appears and I get the message that Windows has found a problem and needs to close. I have followed the Logitech troubleshooting guide by deleting all.tmp, .chk files and those in the windows/temp folder, to no avail. I have downloaded the Logitech software and tried installing it that way instead of from the CD. I have tried to install it after running a 'clean boot', again to no avail. I have also reinstalled Windows XP. Each time, I uninstall everything that installed up to the point of failure, but again no joy!
As I cannot install SP1 or SP2 I suspect that the XP Pro version that came with the PC may be a pirated version - I don't know if this would have any bearing on the problem.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Solution: Installation of Logitech WebCam software
Assuming you dont have any other logitech software installed: get a copy of Hijack This (free utility) and look for any listings of Logitech software. The program will check startup entries, as well as registry entries that may block a successful installation. Delete any listings of the logitech software that you find. Next, go to the start menu and then run and type msconfig. Click on the startup tab and check again for any listing of logitech webcam software. Next go to the services tab and do the same. You can select the "Hide Microsoft Services" box at the bottom to make the list smaller. Reboot the computer and try installing again.
Note: hijackthis will create a backup before any thing is deleted so you can go back to the previous state if that doesnt fix it or if you accidently delete something you need. Also, any changes in msconfig are not permanent and can be undone by going back in and re-checking any boxes that you de-selected
