Understanding BES with Back End Exchange Servers

I am working on a email flow document and have a hole in my documentation.  We have two sites with Exchange 2003 servers and a front end Exchange server at one location.

I understand how the Exchange server interacts with the BES to monitor the messages via the MAPI profile on one server.  The hole I have however is that our BES is pointing to the back end exchange server that is at the same sight as the front end server and the BES.  How is the BES monitoring the emails that are being sent from the front end exchange server to the server at our remote location if it is looking at the other back end server?

Also, should I have the BES connected to the front end server instead of the back end server?

Solution: Understanding BES with Back End Exchange Servers

Hello,

BES interfaces with Exchange using a MAPI profile. It uses that MAPI profile to connect to each mailbox that is BES enabled and it monitors those mailboxes for changes. When a new message comes into the mailbox, or is sent from the mailbox, it pulls a copy and sends it to the BB handheld. So, to answer your question, BES is using MAPI to connect directly to the mailboxes on both your local and remote mailbox servers. The front-end server is irrelevant as it doesn't hold any mailboxes.
